Basically the further from the cinemas you are the smaller in scale the area is. Going from the ticketing and cafes next to the cinema to seating and planters at the far end. All 'peeling' from the ground as folding surfaces. The courtyard between the cinemas will be open to the air and be used as the main circulation space between the cinemas and ticket booths meeting points.

I feel that the next thing to do is to develop the programme so that it's form is determined by the intersections of the 'balloons' so to speak. The programme may need to dictate this form to some extent as well. I'm tending toward a cinema as the programme since I still want to keep the site as a public realm and a cinema is someting KX does not currenty have. My intention is to then extend the line of the balloons to determine the size and orientation of the facades, keeping in mind the permeable nature that I want to keep.

On site I'm thinking that this building will be situated toward the Scala end of the site with an underground connection going underneath to the other side of Gray's Inn Road. Pentonville Road will still be blocked off and an above ground connection to the King's Cross forecourt will be created.

Any other suggestions or comments?

i printed out 1:1 scale image but honestly the quality is a bit blurry. I can't guarantee the image will be fine in that scale.
Shall i use some filters in photoshop to make it completely blurred one? What do you think? any ideas?

Depending on artifacts and purpose of space, some rooms need top light while others do artificial one. and the ligth well could be a symbol of the space.what i'm wondering about is the shape of the light wells might make the concept of space weak. looks a bit different from the rest of the design....hum..dont know well..

Working on an incubator + basemant space of railway. The space is for photographer's studio(incubator on the upper level) and their printing and meeting room(lower level).Massive concrete space including connections and facilities is inserted in the existing brick building.

As we talked in the last tutorial I have tried to evolve the plan of the plaza in different ways. I started with random processes leading by intuition and movement of people, but I realized that creating a pattern as a background can be used to compound the plan in a harmonious way. So I started triangulating the space and choosing different elements generated by the lines of the pattern. Superposing the ground level and the underground level I have developed different schemes of operation. The one I prefer is the option D, because it allows static and dynamic flows in the ground floor and also the entrance of light doesn’t intersect with the movements and activities in the underground floor.

Im beginning to thing 9m wide is too big for the commercial block, that it would just be normal sized instead of small and stacked up. would 6m wide be too thin? considering i have to include storage/staff/public facilities aswell? Help?

Block One Layout

Block One in comparison with Pentonville road. The original path width was more or less 3m, with the addition of block one the pavement is expanded to 'hug' the buildings first floor outline allowing a larger area for the public and a posibility of creating a social space like the LaForet entrance.
This is the commercial block with 14 shops in total, it is 7 floors high to mirror the commercial buildings opposite, correct me if im wrong about that. To keep the building wall-like i have eliminated circulation space and circulation is through the shops themselves. So you would have to go through H+M to get to Topshop for example... Mwuahaha
Loading access is at either end of the block, I didnt want to add extra space for direct loading so this would have to be done within the shops themselves, is this a stupid idea? I kind of like the idea of torturing the shop keepers and having the 'shop workings' and 'shoppers' integrated.

Neill- this is the Casa da Musica by OMA in Porto I was discussing yesterday. Maybe you could look in more detail at how the auditorium and ancillary accommodation are packed in to the building. that's basically what I'm working on at the moment,
working on a 3d model of the site,
I'm designing it now without the bridge,
This starting point should work as a corridor to the campus
a world inside this old facade, the boxes are floating student galleries and
the path and a platform leading to the old lighttower should lead tourist in there
the two top floors will just work as normal office space which will help the whole building
to get some income through rent.

Drawing day and night somehow got me into, let's say not the best mood.

I finally managed to get a for me satisfying strategy with a sort of campus masterplan which would really work well and regenerate new life in an completely unused area of London.....

BUT! What's my connection to the first term? I just analyzed the whole first term again.

I need to find a way to give my project a massive improvement through that otherwise it will get a normal TU Graz project where I got really nice projects through well done site researches but never had time to do experiments like we did in the first term.

I'm not satisfied with just putting a scaled up version of the laminated model on the site.

For me there has to be a connection with the program, with the surrounding and with the first terms work otherwise it will get what Rem Koolhaas would call Junkspace.

Any ideas how I can avoid that?

The idea of this project is to cause a public condenser. The space is generated using parameters as flows, views and infrastructure. The first sketch shows how the space is divided into two parts: the open square (left) and the covered square (right). The first space is a path that articulates a connection in the infrastructures and isolates from the traffic. The plaza is a slope that link east and west with vegetation in one side and twisted paths in the other making possible an underneath connection for the tube (in red). The latter square is a continuous bended ramp generated by means of warping different programmes subject to changes. The programme is guided to arts’ lovers and children but in the same way as a park allows these activities when they are needed. The covered area is defined by two different boundary condition, in one side is the road so the structure is harder and thicker, and in the other side, there is a building and a pedestrian area so materials become softer and opener.
Now I’m drawing these ideas and building a model of the open area to understand how the paths are defining with the difference of height. I’m also defining how light get into the building and how materials are used.

In the front, the open square holds activities that engage people with the place. This curves, which remind the past of this place, have different heights and can be used as benches, cafés, ... I have been analysing communities, activities and times, and the relationship between them. I have made a diagram of uses according to the privacy and the connexion among them pointing out the entrance and possible itineraries. It is an useful tool to organize in plan and in section all the activities within the proposal and to understand the different boundary conditions between two or more activities. Now I’m trying to draw this distribution and defining those relations.

I understand some of you are struggling with reality; After being removed from it for a while it can be quite confronting to see the bare banal reality of the city in it's current state it in no way resembles the artists impressions shown by large NEW projects.

The only way to beat reality is by transforming it (by drawing or modelling) and then testing the effects (by careful thinking) both as an optimist and a pessimist. And drawing again and again. Take it step by step so you can still see the narrative.
Change perspective every now and then (from plan, section to overview) when you are going in circles.

How you will brand and market a program (Silvie) can be part of a strategy but never the goal. Speculation on what form it might take and which spatial/organisational form enhances the development you are looking for.

lost - thinking - HELP

after Friday I have been very lost and did not feel to confident with the crit - was maybe not able to understand the feedback or it did not help me directly so I was thinking and scribbling a lot down.
Also approached a few people in school for help - got a few reading lists and the books were I have my head in right now.
Meantime worked on the group project (team c) drew a section of the allowed building height around our area, although a WEST - EAST section would be very useful. - don’t know if that exists but was not able to get hold of it - so could if anyone has it send it to me please
Otherwise also looking back on Tokyo and seeing were and how it all could come together

I needed to organise my thoughts so I wrote down my basic ideas. I think I will now start with mapping the area to find the environments... I know it sounds a bit like a political manifesto....but bear with me...

CONCEPTUAL IDEA: Our cityscape encourages us to act with direction: to go shopping, to go to the office, to go to the gym. It encourages directed movement. In asking you to put your head down and get on with it, the cityscape tells you not to ask questions of your environment, not to explore your environment. It tells you to be obedient to a greater movement, and not to explore your personal movement. If we are at least in part a product of our environment, what happens when we are programmed not to ask questions…not to explore? I believe it is fundamental to us to explore and to discover, to ask a question with the potential of being wrong or right, not to be told what is wrong or right.

My proposal for kings cross is, in a sense not what I believe kings cross needs, it is what I believe a city needs…that is: a cityscape that encourages exploration.

SPATIAL PROPOSAL: I believe the city has a wealth of awesome environments, each distinct from the other, each potentially as exceptional as the other. I propose to design a series of spaces in the area south east of our site. Each one defined by and born out of one of these environments. These spaces are not connected, it is for the individual to decide if they ever go to the others or even ever find out about the others. These spaces have no programme, it is for the individual to decide what each environment is suited to.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THERE IS NOT PROGRAMME? PROCESS. On the day of construction, posters go up in the area…. “Are you interested in discovering an opportunity?” Those interested turn up, see the environments, and draw straws. For one year they run their programme in their respective environments. One year later, it all comes down.

the format is A4 for the booklet although we gonna have A3 print outs to work with - both portrait
we will still have the colour coding on top with 5 different colours

group c - green
additional - yellow

(thats the smaller strip indicating the section)
the bigger one would be for you guys to choose colours according to every new topic within this colour family
also please change the title written in white to the title of your sheet.

there are 4 templates - 4 possibilities
again use whats the most useful one
it should accomodate everyone except maybe group a (sections, elevations)

ok basically the first is the template with a colour coding at the side 5 colours (you can choose - can also be grey tone :) - intro, A, B, C, acknoledgement...
in that side bit is the page number, the overall section title bit smaller and a big bigger the specific page title
